How should we accurately choose raw sand, resin, curing agent and foundry materials given that they are responsible for 40% of casting defects?

2026-01-06 14:22

Casting materials play a crucial role in casting production, accounting for 20% of the total cost. The probability of casting defects caused by improper selection or use of casting materials exceeds 40%. As casting quality requirements increase, casting companies are placing increasingly stringent demands on raw material control.

The selection of raw materials has a significant impact on casting production, as its quality affects both casting quality and the amount of various materials added and consumed. Therefore, the following aspects should be considered:

(1) Selection of Raw Sand

Raw sand is classified into several types, including ordinary sand, washed sand, and scrubbed sand. Scrubbed sand, with its low mud content, significantly reduces resin waste and should be given priority. Washed sand is the next best choice, but untreated raw sand should never be used. When selecting molding sand, the principle of choosing the nearest source should be followed to reduce transportation costs, and raw sand with a low angular coefficient should be selected as much as possible.

(2) Resin Selection

The choice of resin directly affects the casting quality. Choosing a poor-quality resin not only increases the amount of resin added but also affects the quality of the molding sand, leading to more defective castings. Therefore, the selection of raw materials should not be based solely on the technical data provided by the manufacturer. Instead, one should understand the manufacturer's production equipment, production process, and quality control methods, and try to test the resin's various indicators oneself or have it tested by a reputable testing department. Alternatively, one can learn from the experience of similar manufacturers or choose products from well-known, reputable large enterprises.

(3) Selection of Other Raw Materials

Other raw materials include curing agents, coatings, binders, release agents, and sealing strips. The selection of these raw materials must consider both their quality and their compatibility with the main materials, such as ease of procurement and transportation. While these raw materials do not have a primary impact on casting quality, their impact on casting costs is significant. For example, different amounts of curing agent not only affect production efficiency during the molding process and thus production costs but also material costs. In short, by paying attention to the above aspects, not only can castings that meet customer requirements be produced, but casting costs can also be reduced, bringing development and benefits to the enterprise.
